Learning How to Advocate for Yourself at the Dentist

Think about your last trip to the dentist. Did you leave feeling satisfied that all of your concerns were addressed, or were you uncertain and skeptical of the information provided by your doctor? The vast amount of treatment options and complex terminology can make a visit to the dentist a very intimidating concept. It is common to feel overwhelmed by the importance of what your doctor advises, whether it is applying a sealant to prevent tooth decay or having a tooth extracted to avoid oral infection.

To ensure an optimal dental experience and the best outcome possible, the Fredericksburg Smile Center advises patients to be proactive and ask questions. Here are some ideas on what to inquire about and how to properly understand your course of care.

Understand the issue:

It is imperative to understand the nature of your dental ailments. Ask us to show you the areas of your mouth that are experiencing issues, such as areas of your gums or an individual tooth that’s causing pain. Instead of diving deeply into technical terms, we can note the location and nature of the problem. Visual aids such as radiographs, 3D imaging and photographs can help you better grasp what is happening in your mouth.

No pressure:

It is imperative to understand the nature of your dental ailments. Ask us to show you the areas of your mouth that are experiencing issues, such as areas of your gums or an individual tooth that’s causing pain. Instead of diving deeply into technical terms, we can note the location and nature of the problem. Visual aids such as radiographs, 3D imaging and photographs can help you better grasp what is happening in your mouth.

After one of our Team explains why specific treatments are necessary for your individual issues, take your time to process the information. You have the freedom to consider all of your options before deciding on your care. For example, extracting a wisdom tooth or switching from silver fillings to a composite one can take some time to think about. If you are unsure of your choices, you can schedule the recommended course of action for a later date, allowing you the time to reconsider your choice, or look for a second opinion.

Clarify the urgency and ask about alternatives:

While some dental issues may require immediate attention, others can be addressed over multiple visits. We can outline a treatment plan for you that prioritizes urgent matters and avoids overwhelming you with major procedures at one time. Please ask detailed questions about the pros and cons of each treatment option. We want you to have all information regarding your care, from recovery time to pain management to insurance reimbursement. We can also suggest alternative treatments, such as using antibiotics to manage gum disease instead of opting for a surgical procedure. Being informed can also help patients reduce anxiety.

Understand the cost:

Health care costs and payments can be complicated, so here at the Smile Center, we have dedicated team members who will help you understand your insurance and payment options. We will provide you with best estimates on what your insurance provider will pay and what your responsibilities will be. We offer a variety of financing options.  Our team will electronically submit your claims.  However, we will also encourage you to contact your insurance representative if you have any concerns or need to confirm what they will pay
