What is oral surgery?

Have you been experiencing oral or facial pain that has been impacting your quality of life? Have you tried other treatments but have had limited or no success? You might be a good candidate for oral surgery. Oral surgery is any operation that involves your face, mouth, or jaw. It can fix several problems and dramatically improve a person’s quality of life.

Our experienced oral surgeon performs several oral procedures in our office, and there are many reasons why a person might opt for surgery. Whether you have impacted wisdom teeth that need removal, you want to replace missing teeth, or you have TMJ and need a more effective treatment, our surgeon can perform the surgery that you need, so you can look and feel your absolute best.

Types of Oral Surgical Procedures We Do in Our Office

If you’re considering having oral surgery done at one of our offices, here are just some of the surgeries we perform:

  • Dental Implants: Don’t let missing teeth ruin your smile or self-esteem, as our surgeon can provide you with brand-new teeth that look and function optimally
  • Tooth Extractions: Our Fredericksburg oral surgeon performs tooth extractions, including wisdom teeth removals due to pain and impactions
  • Sleep Apnea treatments: Sometimes merely using a C-PAP machine doesn’t relieve the symptoms of sleep apnea. Our oral surgeon can adjust the upper palate and other parts of the mouth that might be contributing to the condition
  • TMJ Treatment: Temporomandibular joint dysfunction can be a painful condition that fails to respond to other treatments. Our surgeon can perform surgery that can finally provide you with relief. You will need to be evaluated before the surgeon can recommend the best surgery
  • Sinus Augmentation: Also known as sinus lift surgery, this procedure adds bone that has degenerated, which is needed when dental implants are placed

Sedation Options for Oral Surgery

We want to ensure your total comfort while undergoing surgery in our office, which is why our surgeon offers several options for sedation. Here are some of the types of sedation you can expect to be offered:

  1. Nitrous Oxide: Most people know this by its other name “laughing gas.” The gas is administered through a mask that is worn over the nose. It takes about 3-5 minutes to take effect, and once the procedure is over, oxygen is used to flush the gas out of the system. Nitrous oxide doesn’t take away pain, but it can calm your nerves and be used in conjunction with local anesthesia.
  2. Oral Conscious Sedation: This option entails the administration of oral sedatives, usually in the Valium family. You will be drowsy but still able to respond to any questions or prompts that the dentist may have. The medication is taken an hour before the procedure, and the surgeon will also use local anesthesia to keep your mouth numb throughout the surgery.
  3. Intravenous Sedation: This type of sedation is best for longer surgeries or for patients who prefer to be completely under during the procedure. Medication is administered through an IV, which will render you unconscious during the entire procedure.

You will need someone to drive you home after the procedure if you opt for oral conscious or intravenous sedation because it will take time for the medication to wear off.
